"I’ve been working with Mary for 5 months, and my accent has changed significantly!"
Before having classes with her, I was imitating the American accent without actually articulating the sounds as a native speaker. Thanks to Mary, now I know exactly how to move my tongue for each and every sound, and I’m also improving my intonation!
She always finds a way to guide you through the sounds, even when it feels so difficult and different from what you’re used to.
I also appreciate our relationship so much: she is friendly, and we always have a lot of fun during our sessions!
She is 100% the professional you’re looking for if you want to sound like a real American.

How it works
My Method to Putting On an Accent
Every language, and every accent for that matter, has its own general mouth settings that its sounds are born out of.
Some languages are spoken with a wider, concave tongue shape and others are spoken with a narrower, convex tongue shape. Some are spoken with a larger space in the back of the mouth, and some are spoken in a small space in the front of the mouth.
Speaking English with the mouth settings of your native language is like trying to play a guitar using piano techniques. Even though you're making music, the sound won't be right because the movements and techniques required for each instrument are different.
Similarly, if you try to speak English using the mouth movements of your native language, your English will still sound like your mother tongue.
While using slightly different mouth movements can give your accent an exotic 'flavor,' using the exact same settings as your native language will prevent you from consistently pronouncing words correctly and being easily understood by native speakers.
The good news is that you can learn new mouth settings even as an adult!
Do kids have it easier? Yes, because they don't have to consciously learn how to move their mouths by taking my classes.
However, you can sound a lot closer to a native English speaker by taking classes that teach you the specific style of muscle movements Americans use in their everyday speech.
Then you'll learn how we apply these settings to our sounds, making them sound much more natural.
And finally, you'll take what you learn in my classes and make a conscious effort to use those new speech settings in your daily conversations.
Let's be honest -- that is HARD WORK, and your results don't only depend on me.
It's a team effort; you'll have to practice every day in between, record yourself, correct yourself, and intentionally concentrate on your speech in your everyday conversations.
But if you commit to the process, you will love the way you sound in English!

"I highly recommend working with Mary if you want to take a significant step forward in your journey of learning English."
I have been studying English and pronunciation for many years and realized that to improve my pronunciation, I needed someone to help me. That’s when I found Mary, and I am very happy I did! She has guided me in identifying the areas I need to focus on and why.
Previously, despite self-study, I was unaware of my specific mistakes and how to address them. Now, with Mary’s guidance, I can recognize and improve those areas.
Another advantage is that Mary is fluent in Spanish, which allows her to explain English sounds more effectively to a native Spanish speaker.

"I use English everyday at work and I really can tell the difference in my accent when I speak to our clients now."
They say that my English is so clear, understandable and they never know where I am from anymore (I’m from Latin America and I had a very particular accent that anyone could recognize).

Frequently Asked Questions
Which aspects of the American accent will I learn?
My American accent coaching programs cover all of the following topics:
- Mouth posture and muscularity: Patterns in how Americans move their mouths during speech that impact all of the sounds
- How to articulate American vowels, based on American mouth posture
- How to articulate American consonants, based on American mouth posture
- Intonation: How to use pitch to become a more expressive speaker and be more easily understood by Americans
- Rhythm: How to slow down and speed up in the right places to be more easily understood and sound more American
My training focuses heavily on teaching you patterns in the way Americans move their mouths that will give you a more American accent when applied to several sounds at the same time.
How long will it take me to master an American accent?
How long it will take you to master the accent depends on factors like
- Whether you've worked on your accent before
- How close your current accent is to an American accent
- How comfortable you are with experimenting with your mouth muscles and learning to move them in a new way
- How often you practice and how correctly you practice (make sure you're sending me your weekly recordings so I can see how you're practicing between sessions)
That said, most students can expect to become familiar with the accent in 3 months and be able to speak with it in 6 months to a year. Once the accent is learned, it must be maintained, so you will need to continue making focused practice a part of your routine even after this time.
Optional maintenance sessions are offered after completing your initial program.
How can I get the most out of my sessions with you?
Commit to doing the exercises I give you every day before you go to bed. Do not miss a day. Ideally, 15-30 minutes a day would be a great practice routine, but if you only have 10 minutes, use those 10 minutes! Consistency is essential for making a new style of muscle movement an automatic habit.
However, in addition to the focused exercises, you will need to be paying attention to how you talk to others in your day to day conversations. While you're talking about the weather, or your upcoming project, pay careful attention to the way you're speaking and intentionally try to incorporate what you're learning from me. If you hear yourself make a mistake, correct yourself. Do not move on. In order to create new speech habits, you need to be as consistent as possible with them.
Can I take two or three classes a week in a 3-6 month program?
If you'd like to take more than one class a week, either for the entire duration of your program or for just a few weeks, please ask me about it during your consultation.
How will I maintain my accent after my initial program?
Optional maintenance sessions will be offered after your initial program.
In these sessions, you will be able to get feedback and correction in speaking activities to help you maintain everything you've learned.
Can I work on my presentations or scripts with you?
Yes! Generally speaking, I recommend booking a single 1-hour session if you're looking to work on a presentation or script with me, since that is different from the work we'll be doing in the 3-month and 6-month programs. In those programs, the goal is to intensively work on building new muscle habits and apply those to individual sounds to make you sound more American.
In a single 1-hour session, we can focus on a single presentation or script, break down the pronunciation of challenging words, and refine your rhythm.
